Implant therapy has, without question, been one of the most significant advancements in dental care during the latter quarter of this century. Presently, in 1998, it can be considered a usual and customary procedure that has benefited hundreds of thousands of people who either (a) had no prior opportunity to enjoy a new, solid, dentition or (b) needed limited replacement of teeth, and chose not to have any of their remaining natural "ground down" for bridgework.

Implant treatment with Brånemark System® is a procedure performed by an oral surgeon or periodontist working with a restorative dentist and a laboratory as team. All are specially trained in their part of the implant treatment.

What is an implant?

An implant is a man-made root that occupies the position that your natural tooth once held. The implants will support your new teeth.

How much will the implant cost?

The investment varies according to your personal situation. It is impossible to give an exact answer to this question without first examining you. The doctor will be able to give you the information after an initial examination. It is important for you to know that you do not necessarily need an implant for each missing root.

How will I benefit from dental implants?

The benefits of implant treatment include appearance, the enhanced ability to chew and enjoy your food, and often protection of your remaining teeth and jawbone. Dental implants offer many benefits never before available for the treatment of missing teeth.

What can implants do for me?  How can I find out without spending a lot?

Dr. Hart deeply believes that you should be able to gather as much information for yourself as possible, so that you can make an informed decision about your own care and possibilities.  In order to give you the opportunity to evaluate your increase in quality of life, without an increase in your costs, we offer a Complimentary Consulation Policy.  If you can bring your own X-rays, there is no charge for your initial examination or consultation.  If you cannot, we will take X-rays ourselves (at minimal cost), or, if you decline, we will do our best to give you some answers without X-rays.  To review the specifics of our unique Complimentary Consultation Policy, Click Here. If you have any questions about this policy whatsoever, please give Dana a call at 800 / 881-4144.

Is this procedure painful?

Brånemark implants are placed in a very gentle fashion. Care is taken to the various tissues involved. Most of our patients tell us that they experience no more discomfort than during a routine dental procedure.

How long do implants last?

We work with Brånemark System Implants, the original Swedish system. Brånemark implants have been used to replace missing teeth for over 32 years. Dental bridges supported by Brånemark System have been shown to last over 15 years in 90% of cases. We have every indication that they will last for much longer – time will tell!

Will dental implants work for me?

At the time of examination, the doctor will do a thorough examination of your mouth to determine your dental needs. The doctor will then make a recommendation based on your personal needs and clinical situation. At this time all your questions can be answered.

How long will the treatment take?

This is depending on your particular treatment. The treatment is completed in phases ranging from 5-9 months. During this time you are able to live as normally as possible using your existing dental bridge.

How many visits will this treatment take?

The number of visits will depend on the treatment you will need. The doctor can address these issues with you at your consultation appointment.

How long have implants been done?

Implants are not new to the dental field. Prof. Brånemark started his research in the early 50’s and has revolutionized implants as we know them today. Prof. Brånemark placed his first ossiointegrated implant in a patient in 1965, after many years of preclinical studies.

Will I ever be without my teeth?

This depends on your situation. Most patients can leave the office wearing some type of temporary prosthesis. We advise our patient with full dentures to go without their prosthesis for 10-14 days. After that you can wear them comfortably with a soft liner until the final dentition is replaced. The success of our treatment can be compromised if the fixtures are "loaded" or are subject to early pressure from chewing or your prosthesis.

Is it important to take care of the implants after the treatment is completed?

Yes! Maintaining care of the implants will help to assure the long-term success of your treatment. You will be responsible for daily plaque removal, which can be accomplished through brushing and flossing around your restoration. Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to properly care for your implants. You must visit your dentist at least once a year for maintenance appointments.

Is there a difference between implant systems?

Absolutely! Brånemark System® is the only implant with long term international studies proving its safety and efficacy. It is also fully accepted by the American Dental Association for full and partial cases. There is no other system exactly like it.

Does Dr. Hart have much experience with Implants?

Absolutely, again!  Dr. Hart has been providing implant care in Southeast Wisconsin since 1984.  In some cases, he was the first dentist in the midwest to provide certain styles of single-tooth implant restorations.  If you would like to review Dr. Hart's experience, click here to access his log of completed and in-progress implant cases.
